It’s a story that most Americans saw at the time, thought Aww that’s nice, and then promptly forgot…until Senator Rand Paul reminded us of Martin Luther King, Jr., weekend. While he was being interviewed by NBC’s Jake Tapper, Sen. Paul, an ophthalmologic surgeon in his other life, refuted the latest Washington, D.C., swamp screams of “RACIST” regarding President Donald J. Trump. The most generous billionaire actually financed a humanitarian aid trip to Haiti during which Dr. Paul and a team of colleagues were able to restore sight to hundreds of Haitians.
Paul said, “It is unfair to draw conclusions from a remark that I think wasn’t constructive is the least we can say and I think it is unfair to all of a sudden, paint him, well, he’s a racist, when I know for a fact he cares very deeply about the people in Haiti because he helped to finance a trip, we were able to give vision back to 200 people in Haiti.”
Dr. Paul was responding to a line of questioning regarding alleged remarks President Trump made during a closed-door meeting at the White House. The discussion centered around DACA, Barack Obama’s program that allows people brought to the United States as minors through no fault of their own to remain despite not being part of a citizenship program. Supposedly, the president called nations which are very poor, and largely populated by either Africans or the descendants of those who were from Africa as “$#@!holes.” This was parlayed into the president being racist by the mainstream media. As to that, Dr. Paul said:
“There are a lot of questions that this ultimately intersects with policy, and the only thing I regret from all of this, other than I think some people in the media have gone completely bonkers with, you know, just ad hominem on the president, I want to see an immigration compromise and you can’t have an immigration compromise if everybody is out there calling the president a racist.”
As if this LOOK, SQUIRREL moment will submarine the president’s plan to have Congress eliminate DACA. If there is nothing else that President Trump has demonstrated over the year, it’s that impossible is just the beginning for him. Grab some snacks. This is not the end of the immigration discussion.
