The Las Vegas sheriff has spoken. Despite a person of interest in the cross-hairs, and all sorts of online analysis that dissected every last tidbit of information available to the public where the conclusion is that the “lone gunman theory” holds as much water as Lee Harvey Oswald, the sheriff is sticking to his story. Why?
Investigators scanning computers belonging to Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock found “numerous” child pornography photos, the city’s sheriff revealed Friday, adding that the FBI is looking into a person of interest in the case….
What salacious photos of minors have to do with this case is a mystery, but the sheriff did address at least one elephant in the room: the amount of time it’s been since we’ve heard from him.
“I realize it’s been three months since you have received an update on the 1 Oct. shooting,” Lombardo told reporters Friday. “We have done a lot of work trying to piece together what happened.”
The sheriff said investigators “have gone over 2,000 leads and looked at 21,560 hours of video.”
“This report won’t answer every question, or even the biggest question as to why he did what he did,” Lombardo said. “We are all going to have to be patient and let the investigation run its course.”
Those who are familiar with police investigations can appreciate the meticulousness that is indicated here. However, the lone gunman theory really stretches the limits of incredulity. And child porn is disturbing, but hardly a trigger for a shooting rampage into an open-air concert that was essentially turned into a killing field.
Something about all this smells.
The report released at the sheriff’s press conference does talk about Paddock purchasing twice the number of guns in the year prior to the shooting than he had ever possessed. All of that was done legally as well as wiring $50,000 to a bank in the Philippines shortly before the event. And while the sheriff did talk about the strained relationship Paddock had with his girlfriend, no motive was mentioned.
That being the case, we the people will need to be patient about waiting for the real truth to emerge.
