WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE THERESA HALBACH MURDER

WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE THERESA HALBACH MURDER

Anyone who has seen the 10 episode documentary series, MAKING A MURDERER, only on Netflix is uncertain about the guilt or innocence of Steven Avery and his supposed accomplice Brendan Dassey. A lot of controversy has been brewing about this case that took place in Manitowoc County, WI. I’ve seen the documentary and watched countless online videos regarding this case. All I can say is, I am absolutely baffled about what happened. I would love to receive feedback from anyone who is also following this case.  Are Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey guilty of the murder of Theresa Halbach?

There’s nothing like a good murder mystery. As for me, I can sit back and binge on episodes of Snapped, Forensic Files, The First 48, 60 minutes, Dateline– to name a few. This particular case though, is not cut and dry. There is a man, Steven Avery, who had previously served 18 years in prison for a rape he did not commit. It wasn’t until new DNA testing emerged, definitively exonerating him of the crime. He had lost so many years of his life as a result of a corrupt county police department. Upon being released from responsibility of this crime Steven Avery sued the county that made the arrest. There was a $36 million lawsuit filed against Manitowoc County Police Department for the false allegations that lead him to his incarceration.

As Mr. Avery waited for his suit to materialize, a missing persons report was filed. Theresa Halbach, a photographer for Auto Trader, was reported missing. Her last client just so happened to be Steven Avery. It was later determined that some of Halbach’s remains were found on the Avery property.  I won’t go into too many details regarding the case as to give those who have not yet watched the documentary the opportunity to experience the suspense that I encountered while watching. What I will say though is that The Manitowoc County Police Department had no business getting involved.  I believe, had the county used common sense, they wouldn’t have touched this case with a 10 foot pole. They had an outstanding lawsuit against them, making their investigation of Avery appear to be payback for his slandering of the department. Also, money as significant as the amount he was suing for can be a great motivator.

Lastly, I am by no means insinuating that the Manitowoc County Police Department was corrupt. I have seen videos that would make Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, appear to be guilty. Dassey gave a statement that was incriminating and i dont think anyone in their right mind would  give such a statement if they were not guilty. He gave details about the crime, with no apparent coercion, that coincided with that of the findings during the crime scene investigation. Of course no one truly knows what conversations with Dassey took place off camera but it is absolutely incomprehensible why anyone would concoct such an elaborate story, with such vivid detail. Also, an interview with Avery’s ex fiancée Jodi Stachowski was conducted by Senior Producer Natisha Lance of HLN’s Nancy Grace show. The interview certainly wasn’t in Avery’s favor. Then again, maybe someone offered her money to go on the show to further damn the incriminated.  There is so much uncertainty regarding this case that it’s impossible to know what happened. Meanwhile, 2 potentially innocent men could be spending the rest of their lives in prison.
