Peyton Manning Officially Ends Career

That’s all folks. Peyton Manning has officially brought an end to his 18 year career in the NFL.

During a press conference today, he announced his retirement.

The move had been speculated about for several days. News of the decision was broken by veteran reporter Chris Mortensen. His competitors even congratulated him on beating them to the story.

Manning is making a good call here. It is best to go out on top.

He and the Denver Broncos are fresh off a win in Super Bowl 50. It marks the second Superbowl victory for Manning who also won with the Indianapolis Colts.

Currently, he also holds the record for most career wins with 200.

His career is definitely Hall of Fame material.

  • 5x NFL Most Valuable Player
  • 2x Offensive Player of the Year
  • 14x pro Bowl Selection
  • 2005 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award
  • Pro Bowl and Super Bowl MVP Awards
  • Most career yards and touchdown passes
  • Only starting quarterback to win 2 Superbowls with 2 different teams
  • Along with about 42 other records and numerous additional awards

General manger John Elway said of the quarterback “Peyton Manning utilized every asset God gave him to be the best football player he could be… That’s what made him so great.”

“There could not have been a better example,” stated Gary Kubiak, Broncos head coach.

Manning, himself, was emotional during his speech.  He thanked and praised various friends, family, and coworkers. He lauded the fans.

“I revere football. I love the game. So you don’t have to ask if I’m going to miss it. Absolutely! I absolutely will,” he proclaimed. He then listed many of the “little things” that he would miss as well. It was humble touching.

Peyton referenced 2 Timothy 4:7  saying “I have fought the good fight and I have finished my football race.”

He ended his  announcement with “God bless all of you and God bless football!”

It is unlikely that this is the last we will see of Peyton Manning. With his extensive knowledge of the game, he is perfect for a job behind the analyst’s desk.

A growing number of former players have taken positions with networks like ESPN breaking down the games and players each week.

Manning is famous for his “football intelligence” and it will serve him well in the television arena as well.

He will have other projects to keep him busy too. The Peyback Foundation was established by Peyton shorty after he began his pro career. Its mission is to help disadvantaged kids. The charity focuses its efforts in Louisiana, Tennessee, and Indiana.

With nothing left to prove, the time is right for Manning’s retirement. In honor of all he has accomplished, I will end with one simple word.
