In a move sure to stir the palace intrigue sorts, Barack Obama, current occupier of the Oval Office, announced on Wednesday that rather than ATTENDING the funeral Mass of deceased Supreme Court Justice Anontin Scalia, he will send Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill as the official representatives of the administration. Instead, to pay HIS respects to one of the most brilliant legal minds in the nation’s history, Obama and his consort, Michelle, will visit the Great Hall at the Supreme Court on Friday where Scalia’s body will lie in repose.
Just as well, the Bidens are actually church-going Catholics, and so far, the Holy Water hasn’t scorched them. Plus, they’ll know what to do.
Scalia’s funeral Mass will be said on Saturday morning at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This is the church on the grounds of Catholic University of America, and what amounts to the mother church of the nation’s Catholics despite not actually being a cathedral. (It’s complicated.) It is one of the largest, if not the largest, Catholic churches in the United States.
This incident adds another episode to the tenuous relationship the Obama Administration has with the Catholic Church. Most Americans are cognizant of the fight the Little Sisters of the Poor have waged against the regime over the contraceptive mandate in the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare), but few who are not Catholic remember other slights, such as the demand that the traditional symbol of the name of Jesus, or monogram, used by Catholics be covered when Obama spoke at Georgetown University, still nominally a Jesuit school. Other symbols and signs were covered in the same incident. The same demand was made at the University of Notre Dame which is run by the Fathers of the Holy Cross. Both institutions caved.
The National Shrine is actually part of the Archdiocese of Washington, and is literally covered with the signs and symbols of Catholic Christianity. (They have a great choir, too.) There is no hiding it. Due to Saturday NOT being during the Sacred Triduum when the Tabernacle is empty for a time, and the fire and water are yet to be blessed, in Catholic belief, Christ is present. Plus, the funeral will be a Holy Sacrifice of Mass where the focus is prayers for the repose of the soul of the dead even during the Consecration. And Obama won’t be there. Interesting…..
