Just when we thought the 2016 political season was beginning to wind down (for the Sheldon Coopers of the mainstream media, that’s called sarcasm), it seems that an internal pissing contest has started among the members of the Select Committee on Benghazi. On May 31, Chairman, Rep. Trey Gowdy apparently received a letter written by the ranking member, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), expressing the minority’s interest in helping to craft the final committee report. Gowdy’s response? A seven page smack down that enumerates the ethical lapses as demonstrated by the ranking minority member and other Democrats on the Committee.
Gowdy then goes on to not simply describe the leaks, but quote the ranking member and the other Democrats on the committee as they described how unnecessary the additional investigation was, that all the information that was to be discovered already had been, how details of a short fact-finding trip were leaked to the media in an attempt to derail the trip, and, most egregiously, how the Democratic members of the Committee insisted Hillary Clinton be publicly interrogated before the committee was really ready to question her as the Committee knew of the private email server use, but had not released that to the public as yet. (From the tenor of the letter, it sounds like that was a Gowdy decision to keep that under wraps until legal proceedings could be started.)
Overall, Trey Gowdy’s letter to Elijah Cummings claiming that the “essence” of the two year obstruction by Cummings and company has been impeached is a lesson in how to be civilly uncivil. Gowdy is masterful in using the ranking Democrat’s words against him. He also makes use of the media’s efforts to defend Cummings as Mrs. Clinton’s defender inside the committee. Gowdy’s skill as a prosecutor is on display for all to see, and he makes it very clear that the final Benghazi report – whatever that entails – will be crafted not by the Democrats who “did not lift a finger” to aid the investigation, but by the majority allowing the minority to comment and not much more.
What will actually come of the Special Committee on Benghazi’s work is not for them to determine. All Gowdy and the group did was gather the facts. It’s still up to a Cabinet Department to act on whatever is in the final report. The illegal email server is not their concern other than finding the related correspondence. Gowdy is adamant, though, that Cummings and company wanting to be a part of writing the final chapter of the Special Committee on Benghazi has to do with controlling what is released to the public – which was why Elijah Cummings was put on that committee in the first place. It was not a secret when it happened, and now that Trey Gowdy has let the world know that the request to participate in the development of the final report will be about the first work the Democrats have done in relation to the investigation, the word COVER-UP is beginning to take on a new significance.
After all, the 2016 presidential primary season is finished as of today. The Democrats are claiming Hillary Clinton the winner on that side. The Special Committee on Benghazi report might make that declaration uncomfortable for the minority.
