It did not take long on Tuesday after the video of Deborah Nucatola – Planned Parenthood’s Senior Director of Medical Services who blatantly describes how she alters a dilation and extraction abortion procedure in order to extract the chest cavity of the baby intact so that the organs inside are not crushed and can be sold later, all while eating salad and drinking red wine – went viral for all hell to break loose. The headlines screamed from so many publications online, and on Fox News, that it was quite obvious this was a shock to systems from coast to coast. (Video can be found here.)
What people familiar with the legalities surrounding abortion itself pointed out is that not only is this practice disgusting, objectionable and immoral, it is also illegal. Mollie Hemingway at The Federalist courtesy of Tweeter “Born Again Jew” published the exact law Nucatola admits to breaking (and interpreting):
A simple understanding of this law’s plain speaking puts “Doctor” Nucatola – and Planned Parenthood, if she was following orders from above which was implicated in the video if one had the stomach to watch it all the way through – in direct violation. In addition, a major question is being raised about the women who consent to their babies’ body parts being used in medical research signing forms which may misrepresent what will happen to the “tissue.” Ed Morrissey of HotAir put it this way:
Under federal law, it is illegal to alter the procedures of an abortion to maximize the harvesting of tissues, but Nucatola not only describes how she herself does so but also how Planned Parenthood trains personnel to adapt procedures to demand for organs. If the consent forms state that no changes are being done, then clearly Planned Parenthood understands the illegality of this practice — and is lying to their patients about what the technicians are doing to their bodies and the bodies of the babies they’re aborting.
This has not gone unnoticed on Capitol Hill. Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner (R-OH) issued a statement that kicks off the investigation:
“Nothing is more precious than life, especially an unborn child. When anyone diminishes an unborn child, we are all hurt, irreversibly so. When an organization monetizes an unborn child – and with the cavalier attitude portrayed in this horrific video – we must all act. As a start, I have asked our relevant committees to look into this matter. I am also calling on President Obama and Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell to denounce, and stop, these gruesome practices.”
Speaker Boehner was one of multiple lawmakers denouncing the practice of trafficking dead baby body parts for commercial gain, according to The Hill. They also report that the lead in the federal investigation will be taken by Sen. Fred Upton (R-MI) and the House Energy and Commerce Committee. (Not asking questions on that one.)
Planned Parenthood did release a weaselly statement that did not outright defend Nucatola, but did not condemn her, either. If both the “doctor” and Planned Parenthood are complicit in an illegal fetal tissue sales scheme, both deserve every rock Congress, and federal prosecutors can turn over on them. From Mollie Hemingway’s piece:
[Nucatola] specifically says that “for that reason” (the reason being that buyers want intact organs), abortionists will do a procedure under guidance of an ultrasound, altering where they crush the body of the baby to ensure the organs come out in the most valuable way possible.
She also says that they deliver the baby intact and breach (feet first) because it causes the woman to dilate more by the time the largest part of the baby — his or her head — is coming out of the birth canal….
Planned Parenthood may try to argue that the presence of the ultrasound is not a “significant” change to the abortion method. But if they were to try using that argument, it would completely contradict everything Planned Parenthood has vociferously said against requiring them to use ultrasounds as part of the abortion process. When legislators pass bills requiring ultrasounds in abortion, Planned Parenthood has told us (five dozen times in one @ppact Twitter account) about how onerous and awful such requirements are.
Hemingway also mentions the most disturbing part of this entirely gruesome procedure: the practice in question mimics partial-birth abortion, meaning if the fetus is big enough to turn, this is not a baby that is less than 12 weeks in the womb. Those being killed are bigger. Otherwise the procedure would not be dilation and EXTRACTION, but more or less a D and C, which is the more common suction method.
To make matters more curious, “sanitizing” this episode, according to Kevin Williamson of National Review, is already underway.
Sandhya Somashekhar and Danielle Paquette of the Washington Post, who teamed up for sacred-cow defense duty, describe this as a conversation about “the costs associated with sharing that tissue with scientists.” Watching the video leaves it impossible to conclude anything other than that Somashekhar and Paquette are misleading the readers of the Washington Post with malice aforethought. Nucatola is in fact quite straightforward about what sort of business is being transacted and on what terms — and about the necessary deception: “They just want to do it in a way that is not perceived as: ‘This clinic is selling tissue,’” she says. “In the Planned Parenthood world, they’re very, very sensitive to that.”
Where you are negotiating prices for fetal lungs and livers while discussing how to avoid the perception that you are negotiating prices for fetal lungs and livers, you are engaged in a conspiracy to violate federal laws — something that Washington Post reporters once gave a damn about. Richard Nixon wanted to burgle in a way that was not perceived as: “This president is a crook.”
But he was a crook. And it is manifestly the case that the people who run Planned Parenthood are crooks, too.
They are not the only ones. Bloomberg published an apologetics piece downplaying the significance of pro-life interest, all while explaining why liberals should take it seriously.
In the end, a federal investigation into this scheme of Planned Parenthood’s may amount to nothing. They are experts at slipping through the noose of public opinion and getting what they want. But add it to the list of other undercover investigations out there revealing Margaret Sanger’s legacy of hatred and dark cover-ups, and the drumbeat to defund the organization from the people should get a whole lot louder.
