Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) is at it again. Â He’s defending Islam against ISIS, claiming the terrorist group really isn’t Islamic despite the word “Islamic” being in the name, and their living up to the stories and legends of the followers of Muhammad found in texts from hundreds of years ago.
CNSNews.com asked Ellison: “The Atlantic magazine’s Graeme Wood recently wrote that ‘the Islamic State is Islamic. Very Islamic’ and that ‘the religion preached by its most ardent followers derives from coherent and even learned interpretations of Islam.’ Do you agree that the Islamic State is Islamic?â€
Rep. Ellison said: “I do not agree. It’s as Islamic as the Ku Klux Klan is Christian, right. It is, of course, you know, the Ku Klux Klan uses Christian rhetoric. They throw crosses around. But what person going to church on any given Sunday recognizes that as their faith? And so, that’s the same way that I believe that ISIS is Islamic.â€
“I can tell you that I go to Mosque every Friday and I go all over this country and meet Muslims every day, and all of them look at ISIS with tremendous horror.  And, by the way, ISIS kills Muslims more than anybody else.â€
“So Islam says murder is absolutely forbidden, like Christianity. In Christian societies there is such a thing as death penalty after law–I don’t believe in the death penalty, but in Islam it has been, Islamic societies have had it–as this country has it. But it is only according to very strict rules after somebody has been proven to be guilty for the most heinous crimes like murder.â€
“And so, just killing people the way they do, beheading them, beheading noncombatants is the antithesis of what it means to be Muslim or is in the Quran.â€
An audio recording of the interview is available on the CNS News site.
So, just so we have this straight: the Sunni Muslim here who is a Democrat, compares the scourge of the planet that seeks to rid the world of all non-Islamists to a bunch of southern Democratic good old boys who like to scare people? Â Not that any decent Christian would argue that the Ku Klux Klan is in any way Christian at its core, but the Qu’ran (or Koran) actually does mention killing un-believers as a directive. Â The Bible does not discuss lynching or burning crosses, and no where is terrorizing people who are different mentioned, either. Â Quite the opposite.
It may well be that there are muslims that go to the mosque and do not condone what ISIS is about or what they are up to, but those people aren’t condemning the organization as fervently as Christians speak out against the Klan and other such groups. Â That action would bolster Ellison’s argument more than simply claiming that ISIS is not Islamic since it bears all the hallmarks of the faith.
