Now that the big boys who actually know something about business in relation to the internet have had a chance to read through Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler’s “net neutrality” proposal, internet billionaire Mark Cuban had this to say:
“That will fuck everything up,†said the voluble Cuban in remarks Wednesday at theCode/Media conference at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, Calif.
No kidding! Â How and why? Â According to an re/code piece the reason is rather simple:
In early February, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler proposed tough new rules for Internet lines that would prohibit wired and wireless broadband providers from collecting payment to cut to the front of the line, or blocking and throttling lawful content and services.
Cuban said this bid to significantly expand the agency’s authority to regulate broadband providers is nothing more than an attack on giant media companies like Comcast*.
“Net neutrality is just a demonization of big companies,†Cuban said.
Where have we heard that before? Â Mr. Cuban has no problem with Congress passing a law that would prohibit internet providers from blocking legal content, but sees no reason for government commissions to have oversight on a “utility” that so far has been successful in policing itself within the boundries of U.S. law:
Cuban said he does not want a group of political appointees at the FCC regulating the Internet.
“Having them overseeing the Internet scares the shit out of me,†Cuban said.
No arguments here.
