If there was any doubt that Jimmy Carter was one of the densest men to ever be President of the United States, he’s doing his level best to erase all doubt. Â On Monday, his peanut farmerness appeared on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart and had this to say about the source of frustration that results in terror attacks from Islamic extremists:
“Well, one of the origins for it is the Palestinian problem,†Carter replied. “And this aggravates people who are affiliated in any way with the Arab people who live in the West Bank and Gaza, what they are doing now — what’s being done to them. So I think that’s part of it.â€

The man is seriously stuck in the 70s. Â When it comes to western, Judeo-Christian tensions with Islamists, the Israel-Palestine conflict has taken a back burner to Iran possibly having a nuclear weapon, the end of the World War I fix to the territory we call Iraq failing under tribal pressures that predate it, Muslim fundamentalists flying planes into buildings, cartoonists getting shot over poking fun at the quibbles of a religion, wholesale take overs of neighborhoods and imposing Shariah Law in countries where freedom is the law of the land, “civil” wars in countries that used to be our allies in the Middle East…. Â Jimmy, honey, we’ve moved on from Palestine.
To further add to the mush that is the foreign policy paradigm that got him bounced from office in 1980, Carter had this to say about the “evolutionary development in terrorism”:
“But I think this is a new evolutionary development in terrorism, where people go into Syria, they get trained there, they have a passport from France, from Great Britain or from the United States,†he added. “They stay there for a few months and learn how to be a terrorist and then they come back through Turkey and you know they have been there and you know who they are. And I think this event in Paris is going to waken up the people in charge of security to watch those people more closely than they have in the past — and not single out all of the Muslims in the country.â€
No one can learn the intricacies of being a terrorist beyond the basics in a few months. Â It takes years. Â And who says Turkey is the only way into the west? Â Training centers are everywhere. Â Frankly, if more Muslims would speak up against the violence and attempt to assimilate and live side by side with Christians and Jews, the idea that all Muslims are not culpable would gain more traction. Â As it is, uh, no.
