While the world is burning with Islamic terror attacks, President Barack Obama seems largely oblivious and instead is continuing his agenda to increase the welfare state and the power of the federal government—which means more power for him.
He couldn’t bother to go to the Paris demonstration or send a high official following the lethal terrorist attack against the Charlie Hebdo newspaper. He and none of his administration can bring themselves to label the terror attacks Islamic, though it’s obvious they are. And several American military leaders have called his air campaign against ISIS inadequate.
Instead Obama is preoccupied pushing his socialist ideological transformation of America, such as his recent proposals to provide students with free two-year college education and require paid sick and medical leave time at all businesses. These come when there is a $18-plus trillion national debt. Besides that, business and individuals already struggling with Obamacare and other federal regulations in an economy that’s trying to pull itself out of recession.
Regarding the free two-college proposal, he said in a White House video: “Put simply, what I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everybody who’s willing to work for it. That’s right. Free for everybody who’s willing to work for it.â€
Obama said the federal government would cover three-fourths of the tab and the states, the rest. Added to that would be any other funding students can already get.
The plan would cost the federal government $60 billion over 10 years, according to the White House. Hey, what’s $60 billion—just nickels and dimes for the feds?
“Community college should be free for those willing to work for it because, in America, a quality education should not be a privilege that is reserved for a few,” Obama said in a speech at Pellissippi State Community College. He said a high school diploma is no longer enough for workers to compete in a global economy and a college degree is “the surest ticket to the middle class.” Tell that to the millions of unemployed or underemployed college graduates struggling in the Obama economy. He institutes programs such as Obamacare that hurt the economy and then proposes more socialist programs to fix it.
The White House estimated that 9 million students could eventually participate and save an average of $3,800 in tuition annually if they attend fulltime. Students would qualify if they attend at least halftime, keep a 2.5 grade point average, and progress toward a degree or certificate. Notice this federal hook: Schools would have to meet certain academic requirements.
“The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie down the second with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first.”
Obama’s other socialist program is a federal mandate on businesses for paid sick and medical leave, even though the Congressional Budget Office estimates it would cost business $11.4 billion over five years.
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., the new chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said he opposed this proposal because “Americans have great freedom when it comes to work — they can choose the career they like and negotiate with their employer for the things they need.â€
“One more government mandate, however well-intentioned, will only reduce those freedoms—making it harder for employees to find jobs, negotiate for the things they need, and open and run businesses.”
Obama is expected to push his ideas during his Jan. 20 State of the Union address.
Nowadays we’re experiencing what Thomas Jefferson warned about: “The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie down the second with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first.”
We’re caught in the vise between two enemies of the people: Obama and Islamic jihad. The republic has never been in greater danger.
