Most people outside the State of Texas would have had no idea who Rosemary Lehmberg was before Friday. Most would never have seen the video of her being restrained as an abusive drunk during her arrest and booking for intoxicated driving. It is ironic that she and her minions are pursuing legal action against Governor Perry over her oversight of funds for the Travis County Public Integrity Unit. She is shameless. In the face of video evidence and public disgrace which would have sent most self-respecting officials heading for the exits, she has just upped the ante considerably.
Governor Perry is not one to take this type of abuse of power or the deliberate smearing of his good name lying down. He’s a proud Texan with strong conservative values in a state where in most parts, outside of the liberal enclave of Austin where this action is taking place, values still matter.
He opens his remarks by reminding those in attendance that he took an oath as governor to uphold the Constitution of the State of Texas, and he has done that every day for the last fourteen years. He says that is the same Constitution that outlines the authority that he exercised in the decision that is the supposed basis for this politically-motivated lawsuit.
He said he exercised his veto authority for an office whose leadership had lost the public’s confidence by acting inappropriately and unethically. Perry says, “We don’t settle political differences with indictments in this country.†He adds, “This indictment amounts to nothing more than abuse of power, and I cannot and I will not allow that to happen.â€
The Governor says “I intend to fight against those who would erode our state’s constitution and laws purely for political purposes and I intend to win.†He is confident that he will prevail and that this farce of a prosecution will be revealed for what it is.
