Once a Marine, always a Marine. Â Kevin Wood, the parent of a Maryland high schooler, objected to the way Islam was presented in a social studies assignment. Â Wood and his wife Melissa asked the school to give their daughter an alternate assignment, and when the administration refused and said the student would get zeros if the Woods’ daughter did not complete the work, Mr. Wood, a former Marine corporal, went a bit ballistic, as they say.
“That didn’t sit well with my husband,†Melissa says. “He said, ‘I will bring down a sh*t storm on the school. I’m contacting the media, the newspaper, and contacting an attorney.’ He did not say he would come to the school and create a disruption.â€
That did not matter to the Charles County School District of Maryland. Â They issued a “No Trespass” order for Kevin Wood, considering his statements to be a threat. Â (The administrators must not live with Marines.) Â The parents did not object to Islam being taught as part of history so much, as that the followers were presented as being peaceful Middle Eastern empire builders.
“It’s not a religion my husband believes in,†Kevin’s wife, Melissa, tells Yahoo Parenting. “My husband’s issues, and mine too, are that they’re teaching Islam, but they are not teaching the current events on Islam. They are making Islam sound like [its followers] are peaceful people.… He is not saying all Muslims are bad.†…
The school says it is not teaching religion, but history. A statement provided to Yahoo Parenting by the school reads: “The particular unit in question at La Plata High School is on the formation of Middle Eastern empires, in which students learned the basic concepts of the Islamic faith and how it, along with politics, culture, economics, and geography, contributed to the development of the Middle East. Other religions are introduced when they influence or impact a particular historical era or geographic region.â€
Given that history demonstrates Islam rose to power by conquering other empires and then using their achievements for the further destruction of the conquered empires, it would be interesting to know who is writing this curriculum.
The school district does allow parents to opt their children out of sex ed and is willing to issue alternate assignments for reading and other Language Arts concept classes, but history and social studies is considered to be objective material. Â In that case, the argument revolves around how the subject is presented, not that Islam was a major factor in the history of the Middle East.
At this time, the student has returned to class having received zeros for that unit of study and the parents will be meeting with the school board to discuss creating alternate assignments for the social studies portion of the curriculum.
