ISIS Crossing US Southern Border: Judicial Watch Confirms, Homeland Security Denies

It seems that Rep. Duncan Hunter stirred up a bit of a hornet’s nest when he claimed on Tuesday to have information from the Border Control in Texas that ten ISIS fighters have been caught crossing into the United States from Mexico.  Just to double check the story, Judicial Watch got in touch with their contacts and found out:

Islamic terrorists have entered the United States through the Mexican border and Homeland Security sources tell Judicial Watch that four have been apprehended in the last 36 hours by federal authorities and the Texas Department of Public Safety in McAllen and Pharr.

That was as of yesterday afternoon.  And what did Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson have to say about this?

“We have no credible, specific intelligence to that effect,” Johnson said of ISIL insurgents illegally entering the country from along the southern border on CNN Wednesday evening. “And I look at the intelligence reports from overseas from our southern border from our intelligence community virtually every day, numerous times a day, to be on the lookout for something of that nature. So, what I’d say to the American public is we’re vigilant in looking out for individuals of suspicion who may be crossing our border.”

So, the apprehension of ISIS-ISIL-IS fighters isn’t making it to the intelligence briefings? Last month Rep. Jason Chaffez made a similar claim to Rep. Hunter’s, that ISIS operatives had been apprehended crossing the southern border.  Two such reports in a month could be a trend.  But the Homeland Security chief doesn’t want the American people unduly alarmed.

“Let’s not unduly create fear and anxiety in the American public by passing on speculation and rumor,” the secretary told [CNN] host Wolf Blitzer.

Given that there have been sporadic leaks for weeks from officials who do not want to be named within the Border Patrol and Homeland Security, this is more than speculation and rumor. The Judicial Watch piece offers more details of just what is likely being targeted that the government is keeping quiet:

military experts told JW that the increase in security indicates that Ft. Bliss is a target. Military installations in the U.S. only make changes to security measures when there are clear and present threats, according to retired Army Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin, former commander of the Army’s elite Delta Force who also served four years as Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence. “That means they’re getting a threat stream. Ft. Bliss had to have a clear and present threat,” Boykin said. Following that news, federal law enforcement sources in El Paso revealed that U.S. Congressman Beto O’Rourke telephoned the area offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) in an effort to identify—and evidently intimidate—sources that may have been used by JW to break the ISIS in Juarez story.

Rep. Beto O’Rourke is the Democratic Congressman from El Paso.  Somebody wasn’t happy that any information was leaked contrary to the official line from Washington.  We’ll know one way or the other that ISIS has or has not crossed the border when something blows up.
