Flip-Flopping Open Borders Democrat – Secure Border Important In Kosovo, America Not So Much

Michigan Democrat Gary Peters is running for Senator in a bid to take the seat being vacated by fellow Democrat Carl Levin, who is retiring amid scandal. He is in his third term as a Congressman representing a portion of the Democrat success story of Detroit and surrounding areas.

Peters is an open borders Democrat, of which there are many at this point in time. He feels anyone who can get to America should be allowed to stay and compete with Americans for their jobs, driving wages to the poverty line and below.

That position is creating a problem for him now and it could be enough to cost him the election. He’s losing ground to his opponent, former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Land. One thing that is helping to feed is decline is video evidence of inconsistent positions on the value of a national border. He seems to feel they are vital for foreign nations but security at home doesn’t really matter.

In a video from a 2011 forum, Peters said, “You can’t be a sovereign country if you don’t have the ability to safeguard and protect your own borders and control what happens over those borders.”

Peters made a pledge at that time to fight to ensure that Kosovo, a former portion of the nation of Yugoslavia, had what it needed to protect its borders. He mentioned the value of borders explicitly when he said in 2011, “We also want to make sure that we are advocates in the United States Congress for the United States to continue to support our commitment to make sure that the forces are here to assist the people of Kosovo to stabilize the border. We can’t let that investment slip away.”

Then again, that was a time when the United States was first becoming the great protector and enabler of Muslims around the world, so we had an added incentive in securing Kosovo.

Peters’ assertion of the correlation between secure borders and sovereignty flies in the face of his Democrat Party’s position on the issue and also is at odds with recent video from a 2013 event with an open borders group. Peters can be heard telling those gathered at that event that border security should not be a priority when Congress discusses immigration.

In that video Peters says, “Immigration reform is not about enforcement. It’s about finding a way to fix the problems in our immigration system.”

His opponent, Terri Lynn Land wasted no time in pointing out the hypocrisy of Peter’s positions, saying through a spokesperson, “Last week a video came to light where Congressman Gary Peters says he doesn’t believe in border security, now we are learning that he does, as long as it’s not American borders.”

They added, “Why does Gary Peters think border enforcement matters for Kosovo but not the U.S.? Michigan voters deserve to know why Gary Peters refuses to secure our borders and enforce our immigration laws.”

Nobody said being a flip-flopping traitor to your own citizens was going to make any Democrat popular with anyone other than the elites in DC.  Peters may be learning that hard lesson now.
