In his first post-election interview since his victory over Democratic queen Hillary Clinton, President-Elect Donald Trump told CBS’s Leslie Stahl the multi-pronged attack at saving the taxpayers money just through his White House:
- He’s not going to take the full presidential salary of $400,000, just the $1 he is required to take by law.
- He is also not going to be taking vacations. At least not on the taxpayer’s dime, and neither will his family.
“The answer is no,” he said, when asked about his campaign trail promise by CBS interviewer Lesley Stahl. “I think I have to take by law one dollar so I’ll take one dollar a year.”
He admitted that he didn’t even know what the salary was, but when he was told it was $400,000 salary he declined it.
“I’m not taking it,” he said.
He added that he would not be taking too many vacations either.
“There’s so much work to be done and I want to get it done for the people,” he said. “I want to get it done. We’re lowering taxes, we’re taking care of health care.”
To put it mildly, as all of us saw while he was on the campaign trail, Donald Trump is pretty much a work-a-holic, and thrives on a “get ‘er done” attitude. His approach to the presidency will undoubtedly make the rest of us very tired. (The man has boundless energy.) And he is right. There is a lot of work to be done after eight years of presidential malfeasance.
In the end, though, the reality of having a billionaire, jet set sort of family in the White House assures us all that unlike the Obamas, the Trumps have “been there, done that” in exotic locales. They don’t need the US government to foot the bill for them to go there. Also, since they are in the business of owning and running luxury resorts and golf courses, those destinations will naturally less appealing. Hence, the taxpayers are going to save millions while this family is not on vacation. As an added bonus, sights like this will cease, at least for now. (Photo from the Associated Press)
