GUN CONTROL! (Never let a crisis go to waste….)
And another leftist toes the party line on the Orlando shooting. This time the speaker is U.N. Human Rights Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein of Jordan. Thanks to CNSNews:
…urged the U.S. government to live up to its obligations to protect citizens from the “horrifyingly commonplace but preventable violent attacks that are the direct result of insufficient gun control.”
“Examples from many countries clearly show that a legal framework to control the acquisition and use of firearms has led to a dramatic reduction in violent crime,” said Zeid.
“In the United States, however, there are hundreds of millions of guns in circulation, and every year thousands of people are killed or injured by them.”
Zeid deplored what he called the ease with which individuals can buy firearms in America – “in spite of prior criminal backgrounds, drug use, histories of domestic violence and mental illness, or direct contact with extremists – both domestic and foreign.”
“How many more mass killings of school-children, of co-workers, of African-American churchgoers, how many more individual shootings of talented musicians like Christina Grimmie, or politicians like Gabrielle Giffords, will it take before the United States adopts robust gun regulation?” he asked.
(Note how similar the litany of soft targets is to the ones spouted all week by liberals of all stripes. It’s as if they were distributed talking points to memorize.)
First off, the attack on Gabby Giffords may well have been intended for one of her fellow victims, John Roll, who was a federal judge. There’s a good chance she was collateral damage.
Secondly, as usual, this U.N. official does not mention the reality of the disaster that is American mental health laws, just that the men doing the shooting were able to get their hands on weapons despite their histories. Most of the mass shootings in the past few years have been perpetrated by men who were either taking psychotropic drugs, or who had been rejected for institutionalization requested by their loved ones. The ones who got their guns legally didn’t have a traceable record. Most of what we know came out after the shootings, and if charges weren’t filed, there would be no paper trail.
(Um, Mr. U.N. guy, there’s also this business enterprise called the black market where guns are available to anyone with cash. If someone can’t get a gun legally, he or she will go this route.)
Third: every venue with the exception of the incident with Giffords has been in a place that is a “gun free zone.” Liberals want to push this reality off as being a coincidence, but is it? None of the victims could stop the shooter with a like weapon.
Just to add icing to the cake, Zeid went on to further insult not simply the integrity and morality of the hundreds of millions of Americans who own firearms legally, and safely, and who do not use them to hunt other humans, but the sovereignty of the nation:
“Irresponsible pro-gun propaganda suggests that firearms make society safer, when all evidence points to the contrary,” he said.
Zeid cited a recent report from his office on the question of human rights and civilian access to firearms. Its conclusions include a call for governments to regulate the acquisition and possession of firearms.
“Human rights law requires [member] States to protect people from harmful private activities and to adopt appropriate regulatory and institutional frameworks,” the report reads.
“In the light of the harmful impact of firearms-related violence on a range of human rights, the High Commissioner reiterates the call of United Nations and regional human rights mechanisms for States to regulate the civilian acquisition, possession and use of firearms.”
Actually, Mr. U.N. Dude, all information points to responsible gun ownership coupled with TRUE RESPECT FOR HUMAN LIFE makes every place it exists safer. Switzerland, for example, where every man is required to have a firearm, has a very low murder rate. In the United States, the crime rates are the lowest where the laws permit citizens to carry concealed weapons. (How anyone would know a weapon is concealed if the carrier knows what he’s doing is another story.) In contrast, where gun control laws are the strictest – Chicago, Washington, D.C., Australia, United Kingdom, etc. – crime rates are the highest.
That is empirical data that cannot be overturned with leftist propaganda no matter how many times it is repeated, and from as many mouths as the people pushing the meme can recruit.
Gun Control does not work when a criminal with little to no regard for the law is determined to acquire one.
And that is the reality that people like Zeid, Joy Reid, Hillary Clinton, and more do not want to face. Law abiding citizens who respect gun-free zones are sitting ducks when a criminal starts shooting. In the case of Omar Mateen in Orlando, it is increasingly looking like the man was tortured over some sort of homosexual tendency or trauma and acted out as he knew how. It’s very tragic for everyone involved, but the better answer to preventing such a massacre would have been allowing an employee or security to carry and know how to take out an active shooter.
It’s really not that hard.
