A man is dead tonight after being brutally beaten with hammers in a south St. Louis neighborhood. The incident happened around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Gravois Avenue and Itaska Street. According to the police, the victim’s name is Zemir Begic. Reports say he suffered injuries to his head, abdomen, face and mouth.
When the police arrived, Begic was unconscious. He was immediately taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An incident report revealed the victim was traveling in his vehicle when several juveniles approached his vehicle on foot and began damaging it.
â€œThe victim exited his vehicle, and the juveniles began yelling at the victim and striking him with hammers. After the assault, the juveniles fled the scene on foot,â€
The names of the suspects have not been released, but two are in custody. Police say the suspects in custody are black males ages 15 and 16. Police are still searching for two others, a 16-year-old black male and a 15-year-old Hispanic. More than 50 people gathered in the neighborhood after the killing in frustration over the death. Gravois Avenue was closed for several blocks because of the crowd. Details as to whether the attack was racially motivated are still unknown.
